May Library Updates

New gallery exhibits

We are gearing up for a couple new exhibits in the library’s gallery!

Works by Suzanne Lalonde will be gracing our walls in the aptly titled exhibit ‘Art by Suzanne’ until June 11.

Next, the Greater Cochrane Historical Society will be showing ‘Here Comes the Bride’ – a feature of nine women who left their home countries as war brides to start a new life in Cochrane. GCHS is hoping to borrow local wedding photos and memorabilia to enhance this exhibit; if you have anything to share, please drop it off at the library by June 1. This exhibit will run from June 17 to July 4.

While exhibits are running, the gallery is open to the public during normal library hours.

Improving Libby wait times

Your library card unlocks Libby — an app with thousands of e-books, audiobooks, and magazines, all free to borrow!

We love Libby, and we love helping our patrons get the most out of it. Many of you have told us how much you enjoy it — but there’s one common frustration: the wait times.

Because most of Libby’s collection is shared among libraries across the province, some popular titles can have long wait lists. We hear you — and we’re doing what we can to help.

To improve your experience, we regularly monitor wait times and, when possible, purchase additional copies of high-demand titles through limited-time licenses. Our budget has its limits, but we’re committed to making borrowing through Libby as enjoyable and accessible as possible.

So, if you’ve noticed your holds arriving a little faster lately — now you know why!

My Friends

by Fredrik Backman

Most people overlook the three tiny figures at the end of a pier in one of the world’s most famous paintings. But young artist Louisa sees more—and sets out to uncover their story. Twenty-five years earlier, four teens with troubled home lives found solace in friendship and storytelling on that very pier: fiery Joar, grieving Ted, restless Ali, and a gifted but withdrawn artist. From their summer together came a remarkable painting, which later lands in Louisa’s care. As Louisa journeys to discover the painting’s origins, she’s drawn deeper into its past—and toward her own creative awakening—in this moving story about friendship, art, and finding meaning in unexpected places.

Great Big Beautiful Life

by Emily Henry

Alice Scott is a hopeful writer chasing her big break; Hayden Anderson is a gruff Pulitzer winner. They both land on Little Crescent Island, vying to write the biography of Margaret Ives—a reclusive former heiress and tabloid fixture from a scandalous dynasty. Margaret offers them a one-month trial, after which she’ll choose who gets to tell her story. But Margaret shares only fragments of her past with each writer, bound by NDAs—and tension is rising as professional rivalry mixes with undeniable chemistry. Margaret’s life story is elusive, and as Alice and Hayden grow closer, so is their own—part mystery, part romance, and entirely unpredictable.

The Tenant

by Freida McFadden

Blake Porter is riding high, until he’s not. Fired abruptly from his job and unable to make the mortgage payments, he’s desperate to make ends meet. Enter Whitney. Beautiful, charming, down-to-earth, and looking for a room to rent. She’s exactly what Blake’s looking for. Or is she? Because something isn’t quite right. The neighbors start treating Blake differently. The smell of decay permeates his home, no matter how hard he scrubs. Strange noises jar him awake in the middle of the night. And soon Blake fears someone knows his darkest secrets…

‘Check out’ nature with your library

You can borrow an Ontario Parks seasonal permit from the Cochrane Public Library and visit any provincial park for day-use access.

The permit, which you can borrow for seven days, gives you unlimited admission to parks. It only covers the cost of park admission and doesn’t cover overnight stays. That said, you can use it to scope out a park for your next camping trip. Check out all the sights and amenities the park has to offer and start planning your next great outdoor adventure.
