March Library Updates

Start your garden with your library card

Your library has partnered with the Cochrane Horticultural Society to bring back an innovative offering: seeds!

The seed lending library is simple; fill out a form requesting up to ten varieties of heirloom seeds, including beans, cabbage, lettuce, and tomatoes. Present your form and your library card at the front desk and you’ll receive packages containing your requested seeds.

Do your best to grow your seeds, and when the time comes, harvest the seeds and return what you can to the library for use next year.

Please reach out to the Cochrane Horticultural Society at cochhortsociety@outlook.com with any questions.

Book Sale room is open

Obviously you know the main floor of the library is filled with books that you can borrow, but did you know that we also have a room downstairs full of books that you can keep?

Any time the library is open, the book sale room is open for you to explore. There is a huge selection, so you’re sure to find something (or several somethings) you like. Take what you want and pay what you think is fair into our donation jar at the front desk.

Speaking of the book sale room, we want to recognize our friend Marg, who has contributed countless hours to getting the room organized to make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for. Thank you Marg!

All the funds raised from book sales go right back to the library.

New arrivals

Blood Moon

by Sandra Brown

Detective John Bowie is one misstep away from being fired from the Auclair Police Department in coastal Louisiana. Recently divorced and slightly heavy-handed with his liquor, Bowie does all that he can to cope with the actions taken (or not taken) during the investigation of Crissy Mellin, a teenage girl who disappeared more than three years prior. But now, Crisis Point, a long-running true crime television series, is soon to air an episode documenting the unsolved Mellin case. In a last-ditch effort to find out the truth, Bowie tries to figure out the true culprit before he acts on the next blood moon—in four days’ time.

Crow Mary

by Kathleen Grissom

In 1872, sixteen-year-old Goes First, a Crow Native woman, marries Abe Farwell, a white fur trader. He gives her the name Mary, and they set off on the long trip to his trading post in the Cypress Hills of Saskatchewan, Canada. On the eve of their return to Montana, a group of drunken whiskey traders slaughters forty Nakota—despite Farwell’s efforts to stop them. Mary, hiding from the hail of bullets, sees the murderers take five Nakota women back to their fort. She begs Farwell to save them, and when he refuses, Mary takes two guns, creeps into the fort, and saves the women from certain death. Thus, she sets off a whirlwind of colliding cultures that brings out the worst and best in the cast of unforgettable characters and pushes the love between Farwell and Crow Mary to the breaking point.

Before the Swallows Come Back

by Fiona Curnow

Tommy struggles with people, with communicating, preferring solitude, drifting off with nature. He is protected by his Tinker family who keep to the old ways. A life of quiet seclusion under canvas is all he knows.
Charlotte cares for her sickly father. She meets Tommy by the riverside and an unexpected friendship develops. Over the years it becomes something more, something crucial to both of them. But when tragedy strikes each family they are torn apart.
Charlotte is sent far away. Tommy might have done something very bad.

Jane Goodall is back

As you may be aware, the library was selected as one of the five sites across Ontario to host Jane Goodall’s Reasons for Hope, an exhibit developed by Science North.

Reasons for Hope features an exclusive 25-version of the film of the same name, which features stories such as the Northern Bald Ibis’ migration over the Alps, the re-introduction of the American Bison by the Blackfeet Nation, and the worldwide recognized Sudbury Regreening. To complement the film, there are several interactive components for young and old to explore biodiversity and the environment.

The display is currently up in our gallery room downstairs, so come check it out this month. It will be up until mid-May, at which time we will be making room for an art show, so don’t miss out!
